Kalicharan Faculty Kalicharan Misra, M.D., F.R.C.S., Ph.D.
Chancellor

Dr. Kalicharan Misra, trained in the United Kingdom, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, received his MBBS and MS degrees from Prince of Wales Medical College, Patna, India. For his surgical sub-specialization, he focused on Plastic Surgery. After successfully passing the ECFMG examinations in the United States, Dr. Misra moved to Canada to pursue a Ph.D. in Plastic Surgery. He decided to make Canada his home and has resided there for the past 30 years. Dr. Misra has two daughters and a son. One of his daughters is a Fertility Expert and Gynecologist in Scottsdale, Arizona; another one is a Surgeon in Cedar Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills, California; his son holds a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in Canada.
Dr Sing Faculty Manmohan Singh Jhajj, MBBS, M.S.
Dean of Student Affairs

Dr. Manmohan Singh Jhajj received his Masters Degree in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) from Jiwaji University, India in 1987. He worked as consultant and then as the Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery in Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Hospital, where he trained post-graduate students. Dr. Jhajj later practiced as an ENT surgeon and as a family physician. He has published various research papers and presentations in head and neck cancers. Dr. Jhajj conducted many free diagnostic camps. Having successfully completed the Medical Council of Canada examinations, Dr. Jhajj has volunteered in the emergency ward and ICU family rooms of the Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary. Dr. Jhajj also participated in the Medical Communication Assessment Project (MCAP) Program at University of Calgary in 2011. Before joining St. Martinus University, Faculty of Medicine, Curacao, Dr. Jhajj has taught Gross Anatomy, Embryology and Histology in other medical schools.
James Brown Faculty James R. Brown, M.D.
Dean of Clinical Sciences
Dr. James Brown, a native of Texas, graduated from The University of Texas Medical School, Houston, TX in 1982 and proceeded to complete his residency in Family Practice at Brackenridge Hospital, Austin, TX in 1985 and started his career in Austin, TX. Dr. Brown has held many positions during his accomplished career, including Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Humana/PCA Health Plans of Texas; Board of Directors, American Cancer Society of Austin, Austin, TX; Medical Director, Vice President Medical Director of Seton Northwest Hospital, Austin, Texas and finally Vice President Network Case Management of Seton Family of Hospitals to name a few. Dr. Brown is a member of American College of Physician Executives, Texas Medical Association, Travis County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Academy of Family Physicians and American Case Management Association amongst others.
Priyam Sharma Faculty Priyam Sharma
Dean of Administrative Affairs
With a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, Ms. Priyam Sharma has been involved in the medical information, administration, and technology field for most of her career. In the first decade of the 21st century, Ms. Sharma took a small basement-run operation and made it into a multinational corporation spanning over 3 continents with over 500 employees and various patents that are ubiquitous today. Employing the same approach, which incorporates emphases on quality service and innovation, Ms. Sharma continues to bring new advancements, now in the field of medical education.
Marc Faculty Marc Poulin
Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs
Mr. Marc Poulin earned a Bachelor and Master’s Degree of Science at the University of Maine at Orono where during a career fair he was hired to work as a Cardiovascular Sales Specialist with Parke Davis. While with Parke Davis, Marc earned many sales and performance awards. An opportunity came available to Mr. Poulin in the field of medical education and his knowledge of the workings of physician offices and hospitals allowed for a comfortable transition to working with students in medical education. Now as a member of the administrative team for St. Martinus, Marc brings 20 years of experience in developing and maintaining a dynamic clinical program and excellent student oriented management. Medical education is a very dynamic process and developing clinical training opportunities in order that each student have the best experience remains the primary goal of Mr. Poulin as he works with the Sint Martinus Team.
Eric Faculty Eric Day
Vice President of Clinical Affairs
With a Master’s degree in Business Administration with Healthcare Emphasis, Mr. Day has been in Healthcare Industry for over 20 years in various capacities. His love for sports and Sports Medicine started when he did an internship with the Dallas Cowboys Football Club in 1993. Eric has been a Healthcare administrator with experience in management of physician practices, outpatient rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, and ambulatory surgical centers. He is a state licensed and nationally certified athletic trainer and a member of NATA and SWATA athletic trainers associations. Eric loves music and photography and likes to spend time with his wife and three children.
Peter Faculty Peter Fontilus, Pharm.D.

Dr. Peter Fontilus obtained his Docturandus/M.Sc. degree (Pharm. D. equivalent) in Pharmacy in 1976 from the State University of Leiden in the Netherlands. From 1980 to 2011, Dr. Fontilus held the position as Inspector of Pharmacy with the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Affairs, while also holding a position as the Inspector General of Public Health in the Netherland Antilles. As part of his professional activities, Dr. Fontilus is the Vice Chairman for the Drug Registration Board of the Netherlands Antilles, as well as a member of the Examination Board for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians. Amongst his accomplishments, he has been awarded the Touchtone Trophy for Excellence in Regulatory Affairs and the Caribbean Pharmacists Primus Award from the Caribbean Association of Pharmacists.
Keli Faculty Sirving Keli, M.D., Ph.D.
Associate Dean of Integrated Clinical Medicine
Dr. Keli earned his M.D. Degree from the University of Groningen in 1986. His specialty training took place in the Netherlands and at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He was certified as a Social Medicine/Public Health specialist in the Netherlands in 1991. In 1995 he obtained his Ph.D. degree in the Netherlands; his thesis, entitled ‘Epidemiology of Stroke, Relative to Blood Pressure, Diet and Alcohol’ included pioneering research in epidemiology and statistics. Since then, Dr. Keli has garnered extensive experience in Public Health, Epidemiology and Management, and Statistics. He has held key positions in several Social Medicines and Public Health institutions including: the Institute of Social Medicine of the University of Leiden (1988-1989), the National Institute of Public Health of the Netherlands, the Antillean Department of Public Health, the Curaçao Public Health Service, and the Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital. Dr. Keli has taught extensively for the last 15 years.
Ponte Faculty M.L. Ponte da Costa
Dr. Ponte da Costa was born and raised in Curaçao, but has different cultural backgrounds with Portuguese, Latin American and Dutch influences. The interest in Emergency medicine arose right after these experiences and he started his training in the south of Holland (Heerlen). He is the first Board certified Emergency physician form native origin that came back and started as the medical coordinator of the Emergency department in 2007. After his medical degree in Groningen, the Netherlands, Dr. Ponte worked in several hospitals in Holland and Curaçao at surgery, emergency and cardiothoracic surgery departments. He currently works in the Emergency medical management and involved in clinical emergency care at the St Elisabeth hospital Curaçao.He also has teaching activities to nursing and medical staff. His main goals are reaching higher levels of emergency care to our local population, prevention plans, adequate trauma care and research on local level. Some volunteer work is being done providing medical prevention plans to schools and clubs around the island.Dr. Ponte has SEH arts KNMG (Board certified registration in Europe) and is also a member of the Dutch Emergency Physicians society.
Bajaj Faculty G. Bajaj, M.D., MPH, Fellowship in Clinical Research
Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Premed
Dr. Bajaj completed his MD degree in 2007. After finishing his MD, he worked as a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, in Critical Care, and at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in the Department of Anesthesiology. He also worked at the very prestigious, world-class Apollo Hospital in India. Dr. Bajaj’s main interests lie in Pathology and Microbiology. Before joining St. Martinus University, Dr. Bajaj taught at St. George’s University, Grenada.
Kunik Faculty Frank P. Kunik, Jr., D.O.
Doctor Kunik received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, and attended residency in Internal Medicine at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in Sierra Vista, Arizona. In addition to the training of the practice of traditional medicine, Dr. Kunik studied Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and incorporated its use into his medical practice. He earned his Baccalaureate of Arts degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder and graduated Magna Cum Laude after completing his Honors Thesis entitled “The Effects of Olanzapine on Mood”, which investigated the effects of using atypical antidepressants to block the reward pathways (dopaminergic pathways) implicated in addiction. Dr. Kunik brings over 15 years of teaching experience to SMUFOM with a specialty in Human Physiology and Clinical Medicine, believing in the educational development of students in preventative medicine and the tremendous value of public service.
Ahmad Faculty Faiz Ahmad, Ph.D.
Dr. Faiz Ahmad, Professor of Biology at Brandon University, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, received a Master’s degree from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada in 1984 followed by a Ph.D. from the same University in 1988. He did his post doctoral fellowship at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA. Dr. Ahmad has written several book chapters, he has authored numerous research papers in research journals worldwide.
Elshot Faculty Earley Elshot, M.D.
Dr. Elshot graduated from the University of Suriname Faculty of Medicine. Previously, she held numerous positions at SMUFOM including the Dean of the University. Currently Dr. Elshot is the Inspector of Health at GCNA in the Netherlands Antilles and is a professor of the Physiology Department at SMUFOM.
Saira Faculty Saira Moeniralam, M.D.
Dr. Moeniralam is a graduate of the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She has been a certified Physician and a General Physician since 1985. She has over 25 years experience in Integrative Medicine, combining the backgrounds of Anthroposophy, EFT, Nutrition and Nutratherapy, Social Medicine and Bioenergetic/Informational Medicine. Dr. Moeniralam has also taught at the International Institute for Bioenergetic and Informational Healthcare, Germany and the New Health Academy in the Netherlands.
Soria Faculty Danna Soria, M.D.
Dr. Soria obtained her M.D. degree from Universidad de Ciencias Medicas de Centro America (UCIMED), in San Jose, Costa Rica, in 2004. She continued her clinical training by completing clerkships through Harvard Medical School Children’s Hospital, Boston and Shriners Hospital, Boston, and at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans.In 2007 she obtained her ECFMG certification after completing her Board Examinations.For the past four years, she and her husband have been living in Willemstad, Curaçao, and greatly enjoy their life on this beautiful island.
Davu Faculty Gayathri Davu, M.D.
Fellow in Intensive Care/Pain Management/Emergency Care
Dr. Davu has been teaching and practicing in Andhra Pradesh, India for the last 3 years. Dr. Davu obtained her fellowships in Intensive Care Management, Pain Management, and Cardiac and Accidental Emergencies from India and was involved with the active management of respective patients in India. Dr. Davu possesses a keen interest in academics, and has been involved in teaching medical students in India. Dr. Davu scored exceptionally well on USMLE Step exams as well.
Soraya Faculty Soraya Verstraeten, M.Sc.
Ms. Soraya is from the Netherlands and is currently a researcher/project manager at the Public Health Institute in Curacao. There she has been involved with several projects such as the National Health Survey 2013 and the implementation of a National Health Research System. Ms. Soraya has a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Utrecht, Faculty of Medicine. Previously, she taught at the University Medical Center Utrecht and the University of Curacao. Her teaching certification was obtained from the John Hopkins University. Ms. Soraya has several scientific publications to her credit and is the mother of an adorable little daughter.
Vikas Sacher Faculty Vikas Sacher, MBBS
Dr. Vikas Sacher received his MBBS degree from Padmashree D.Y. Patil Medical College, Pune, India. He is ECFMG certified. Dr. Sacher has worked for 2 years at University of Miami as research scholar with clinical research focussed on heart and lung transplant with several publications in international journals. Dr. Sacher has completed a year long internship in general surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami (USA). Dr. Sacher is married to Dr. Shamli Sacher, a graduate of S.G.R.R. medical College, Dehradun, India.
Gest Faculty Thomas Gest, Ph.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Thomas Gest obtained his M.S. in Anthropology from Florida State University, followed by a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Gest completed his Postdoctoral Fellow in Anatomy at the University of North Dakota. He is best known for developing computer-based educational materials for anatomy, innovations in medical education, and developing vascular patterns using scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts. Dr. Gest likes scuba diving in his spare time.
Jerome Faculty Jerome J. DaSilva, M.D., FRCSC
Visiting Professor
Dr. DaSilva is an orthopedic surgeon sub-specializing in sports injuries and arthritic conditions of the knee, hip, and shoulder. Dr. DaSilva earned his medical degree from the University of British Columbia with multiple scholarships and awards. He completed orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. Dr. DaSilva completed a sports medicine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. While at Rush he worked as part of the medical staff for the Chicago Bulls basketball team, Chicago White Sox baseball club, Chicago Steel hockey team, and the Chicago Bandits professional women’s softball team. Dr. DaSilva has also traveled internationally with US Soccer as a team physician. Following his time in Chicago, Dr. DaSilva visited the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado to learn more techniques in hip arthroscopy and joint preservation. Dr. DaSilva has published numerous articles and book chapters on surgical techniques and clinical outcomes in sports medicine. Dr. DaSilva has served as an instructor at the arthroscopy learning center, and is a journal reviewer for Arthroscopy. Dr. DaSilva is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Stefan Faculty Stefan Gluck, M.D., Ph.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Gluck attended medical school at Freie Universität in West Berlin, Germany. He is currently a Sylvester Professor in the Department of Medicine, Miller School of Medicine, at the University of Miami, and a Medical Oncologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Dr. Gluck was presented the “America’s Top Oncologists 2008″ award from Consumers’ Research Council of America; he has also received the “Best Doctors in America” honor in 2005 and earned the prestigious title every year up to 2012. This special merit is earned on the basis of a nationwide survey of more than 1 million votes from his peers. Dr. Gluck held a special lecture entitled, “An Academic Career in Medicine from an International Perspective,” and is a visiting professor at SMU.

Dr. Agarwal graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. His clinical training includes: residency at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT; Trauma and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Connecticut, Cardiothoracic Fellowship Training at the University of Wisconsin. He is currently Associate Professor of Surgery and Section Chief of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, Burn and Surgical Critical Care at the Univ. Of Wiscosin, Madison. Dr. Agarwal is board certified in General Surgery and Critical Care. His areas of expertise include: Trauma; Thoracic trauma; Traumatic brain injury; Abdominal trauma; Surgical critical care; General surgery; Upper GI (hepatobiliary, stomach, esophagus); Lower GI (colorectal, small bowel); Hernia surgery; Laparoscopic surgery; Emergent surgery (acute care surgery); Wound healing; Resuscitation.
Caven Faculty Thomas Caven, M.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Caven graduated summa cum laude from The University of Texas at Austin, B.A. Plan II Honors Program. He completed his medical education at UT. Medical School at San Antonio, where he was an A.O.A. graduate. His postgraduate training followed, at John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas (affiliated with UT Southwestern), where he also served as the Chief Resident. In 1983 he began a private practice in Family Medicine in Austin, and in 1989 he joined Austin Diagnostic Clinic where he served on the Board of Directors. Dr. Caven was a founding member of Travis Physician Associates in 1994, helping develop it into a large primary care group which merged with a Seton based primary care group to form Seton Health Partners in 1998. Since 2001, he has also chaired the board of the Seton Medical Group, a 501a corporation, and is the physician member of the Seton Network Risk Assessment Committee, performing risk assessment and medicolegal analysis. Outside activities include the External Advisory Committee of the University of Texas School of Biomedical Engineering.
Arshad Faculty M Kaleem Arshad, M.D., DFAPA
Visiting Professor
Dr. M Kaleem Arshad earned his graduate degree from Dow Medical College. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Tulane University Medical Center and Charity Hospital in New Orleans, followed by his psychiatry residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Arshad has practiced psychiatry for 25 years and is founder of Physician Care, a private psychiatry practice group in the New Orleans area. He was recipient of 1988 First Annual Dr Jacob Schut Achievement Award for excellence in training and professional growth in field of psychiatry. Dr. Arshad is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a Medical Director of the Grief Resource Center with the Akula Foundation with Canon Hospice. A former president of the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association, Dr. Arshad is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Bhatt Faculty Pushpa Bhatt, MBBS, MPH
Visiting Professor
Dr. Bhatt received her medical degree from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College of Kanpur University in India and M. P. H. from the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University, New York. She also holds a Diploma in Dermatology from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Bhatt previously held positions with the World Health Organization and the several branches of the Government of Nepal where she conducted research on AIDS and carried out programs for limiting its spread. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her work, delivered presentations at conferences and symposia, and has published extensively.
Vegt Faculty Paul Vegt, M.D., Ph.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Vegt is a physician and chief of the clinical program at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht, Netherlands. His expertise and innovative techniques in his lecture, entitled “Past, Present and Future in Bone Fracture Surgery” were presented to our students. Dr. Vegt has been a respected and knowledgeable professor in the Netherlands, and will return to SMUFOM for more lecture series.
Ronny Faculty Ronny Tan Paap, M.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Paap obtained her medical training at Medical Doctor University of Utrecht. She is a board certified Psychiatrist with certifications from Vereniging voor Nederlandse Vrouwelijke Artsen (Dutch Association of Female Doctors), Section V.I.P. (Women in Psychiatry) NVvP (Dutch Association of Psychiatry), and Section Quality in Psychiatry NVvP (Dutch Association of Psychiatry). She also obtained specialized training as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Reporting, Pro Justitia and Training Systems in Organisations. Dr. Paap’s lecture, entitled “Isabella. Autism or Misjudgement of Somatics by Countertransference” helped our students take a first hand look at a case study linking autism, lyme disease, and narcolepsy from a psychiatric point of view. Dr. Paap will be returning every semester as the visiting faculty.
Ayal Faculty Ayal Zahavi, M.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Zahavi is a specialist at the Revalidatiecentrum Curaçao Rehabilitation Center whose expertise is focused on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Zahavi lectured on the manifestation and diagnosis of common soft tissue disorders. Dr. Zahavi is been in love with academics and teaching and will be coming back for more lecture series.
Peter Vegt Faculty Peter Vegt, M.D., Ph.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Vegt is a Urologist at Rijnland Zorggroep in the Netherlands. Dr. Vegt has numerous publications focused on the study of bladder cancers. During his presentation, he focused on the field of urological medicine and the many opportunities for focused research within the field. Dr. Vegt will be coming back to elaborate more insight into urological medicine.
Paul Faculty Paul Ackerman, M.D.
Visiting Professor
Dr. Ackerman has been a general surgeon for approximately 30 years with extensive experience in various forms of surgical procedures. His lecture entailed a detailed discussion into the changes general surgery has taken in the last decade including technological advancements and innovation. Dr. Ackerman returned to SMUFOM for a special lecture series discussing insight into the life of a Resident post completion of the MD program.
